Weymouth & Portland Maritime Festival

4th to 12th July 2009



The spirit of the sea is a festival thats held in Weymouth, its aims to bring all maritime related events together to build a legacy for the Borugh which are to host the Sailing events for the 2012 Olympics and Para Olmpic Games. It involves people from all walks of life and professions, and has something to suit everyone.

Saturday 4th - Sunday 12th July
  • Weymouth 'Beach Live'Live music on Weymouth seafront
  • Steamship Shieldhall Will be alongside in Weymouth Harbour for the whole of the Spirit of the Sea Festival

Saturday 4th - Sunday 12th July
  • Open Water Swimming Championships The 13th Championships of this very successful regional competition
  • The Chesil Beach Centre Pebbles, Boats and the Sea Explore Chesil Bank, the Fleet and Portland Harbour above and below water
  • Stories by the Sea Make your way to Weymouth Beach between 10am-4pm for story telling

Saturday 4th and 11th July
  • Gymnastics Display Join the Dorchester YMCA Gymnastics club Scorpios Display Team at the Spirit of the Sea

Tuesday 7th July
  • Dorset Special Schools Beach Festival Dorset Special Schools are entering into this years SPIRIT OF THE SEA through a new and exciting beach festival being held on Weymouth Beach.
  • Beach Volleyball Top local teams fine tune their skills in preparation for the countries biggest Beach Volleyball Championships

Wednesday 8th July
  • Tag Rugby Tag Rugby on the Beach all ages welcome, come down, register and join in.

Thursday 9th - Sunday 12th July
  • Henri-Lloyd Weymouth Regatta Four days of competitive racing including long distance

Saturday 11th - Sunday 12th July
  • Weymouth Maritime Modelling Festival One of the country's leading model boat events
  • Dorset Seafood Festival The Dorset Seafood Festival will celebrate the journey our seafood takes from sea to plate
  • MarineEx Trade Show The Weymouth & Portland Marine Show
  • The Universal Big Gig Nothe Gardens and the harbourside, with racing around Newtons Cove area

Sunday 5th July and Saturday 11th
  • Try a Sail Days We hope to see you either on Weymouth Beach or at the National Sailing Academy but please book your slot to avoid disappointment

Saturday 11th July
  • Art in the Park 'Art in the Park' is a new Royal manor workshops (RMW) annual summer event in conjunction with W&PBC as part of the Spirit of the Sea Festival
  • W&P National Sailing Academy Open Day Tours of the 2012 Olympic sailing venue and a chance to have a go at sailing or windsurfing

Sunday 12th July
  • Island Voices Island Voices Community Choir and the Chesil Cove Children's Choir will be performing at Brakenbury infants school.
  • Race to the Bill Triathalon The first classic distance triathlon from the Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy
