Rufus Castle
Rufus Castle was built overlooking Church Ope Cove on the Isle of Portland, and its remains are best viewed from the beach. It is believed that the castle was built for William II and it is likely that the remains are only a small part of the original Castle.
In 1258 a licence was granted to rebuilt the castle after its capture by the Earl of Gloucester from King Stephen The castle was constructed in a pentagon shape with thick walls and numerous loop holes hence its alternative name Bow and Arrow Castle
To get there head for Portland at the top of Portland take the left fork to Easton follow the road until you read the Mermain InnĀ and the sign for Curch Ope Cove Opposite on the main road is a secluded carpark
While in the area you may also wish to visit Portland Bill or Portland Castle.
