Rivers of Dorset



The River Allen
The River Allen in Dorset  has its confluence with the River Stour of Wimborne Minster.


The River Avon
The River Avon covers 3 counties Wiltshire, Hampshire and Dorset. It flows from east of Devizes into Hampshire along the edit of the New Forest through the towns of Ringwood and Fordingbridge and joins the river Stour at Christchurch where it finally flows into the Mudford harbour and into the English Channel


The River Bourne
The River Bourne is a small river its name is taken from Middle English bourn or burn, a small stream, and giving it to the town at its mouth. The river flows into the English Channel at Bournemouth. It flows through the gardens of Bournemouth and then underground through the square, and again near the east of Bournemouth Pier so its mouth is now not visible.


The River Cerne
The River Cerne is ten miles london and rises in the chalky hills of the Dorset Downs at Minterne Magna,  it flows down the valley through the village of Cerne Abbas then Charminster, and finally into the River Frome in Dorchester.


The River Frome
The River Frome is 30 miles long and the major chalkstream in the South West of England. Boats can still navigate this river from Wareham to Poole Harbour.

The River Hooke
The River Hooke is 6 miles long and runs from the sourse at Toller Whelme through the surrounding villlages of Hooke, Kingcombe, Toller Porcorum, and Toller Fratrum joining the River Frome at Maiden Newton. Originally the river was called the Toller river.


The River Jordan
The River Jordan flows into Weymouth Bay, it is a small river the source in the  hills above Sutton Poyntz which is close by, running down through Preston and the various holiday parks and finally flowing out onto the beach at Bowleaze Cove.


The River Moors
Moors River in East Dorset starts at the point where the River Crane and the Ebblake Stream meet, at Ebblake, south of Verwood. It runs pasts Hurn and Bournemouth International Airport and joins the River Stour at Blackwater It is a well known river for spotting the orange-spotted emerald dragonflies.


The River Piddle
The Piddle, Trent or North River is a small rural river that rises at Alton Pancras Church and flows south easterly parellel to the River Frome. Many of the villages it passes through are named after it: Puddletown, Tolpuddle, Piddlehinton, Piddletrenthide, Affpuddle, Briantspuddle, Turnerspuddle. Only two of the villages still use the name piddle though the name was changed to Puddle to avoid embarrassment before Queen Victorian visited "Piddletown".


The River Stour
The River Stour is over 60 miles long and flows through Wiltshire and Dorset  it flows from a series of lakes in the Stourhead estate owned by the National Trust. It flows south into Dorset through the Blackmore Vale and the towns of Gillingham and Sturminster Newton, where it is joined by the River Lydden. It then flows into Blanford forum breaking the chalk ridge of the Dorset Downs and then south east to Wimbourne Minster where it joins the River Allen.


The River Sydling
The Sydling Water is a  five mile long river in Dorset,and flows from north to south from Up Sydling until it joins the River Frome near Grimstone. The river source is a spring at Up Sydling. It passes the deserted mediaeval village of Elston and is then crossed at a ford by the road from Marrs Cross to Cerne Abbas. It then flows through the village of Sydling St. Nicholas and through rural countryside until it goes under Grimstone Viaduct and soon afterwards into the River Frome near Grimstone.


The River Wey
The River Wey of Dorset, is a short river which rises in Upwey at the Upwey Wishing Well,  Most of the river's course is in the built-up area of Weymouth, running through the former villages of Upwey, Broadwey, Nottington, and Radipole, through Radipole Lake and into Weymouth Harbour. The river is important for wildlife and Radipole Lake is a National Nature Reserve run by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds.
