Beach Type: Pebbles - large rocks
Information: This beach is formed by a large expanse of limestone pebbles and is backed by cliffs on three sides which shelter bathers from the prevailing winds. Rufus Castle overlooks the beach which is south facing. There are also a number of privately owned beach huts for those that want to get away from it all and. lots of Steps lead down to the beach!

Emergency Facilities: No
Safe for Kids: Bathing is safe close to the shore but not for very young children or poor swimmers, the offshore currents can be strong. The beach is not recommended in rough weather or for surfing.
Pier: No
Litter and Dogs: The beach is cleaned twice a year by local working parties. and as required by the beach hut owners. Litter bins are provided. Dogs are allowed. There are no dog bins. but dogs are seldom seen on the beach.
Facilities: Toilets are available at the beach. A café and caravan park are nearby.
Activities: Swimming. snorkelling and fishing take place off the beach.
Getting Here: The A354 Weymouth to Portland Bill road leads to the beach. and approximately 180 steps descend from the cliff top next to the museum. There is no wheelchair access beyond Portland Museum.
Parking: Parking is available for 15-20 cars. a quarter of a mile away opposite Pennsylvania Castle. Parking is free.
Public Transport: The nearest train station is 7 miles away in Weymouth. Bus service available from Weymouth and Portland.
Walking: There are numerous and well marked footpaths on Portland and the island affords superb cliff-top views. Portland is soon to be integrated into the South West Coastal path. Rufus Castle overlooks the Cove and the ruins of Old St. Andrew's church.
Rufus Castle and Portland Museum is next to the beach. Portland Bill Lighthouses are nearby and Portland Castle is at Castletown just off the main road from Weymouth leading onto the Island
