Castle Cove Portland Harbour at Castletown Portland

This beach is very tiny and right next to the Olympic Sailing Venue which can be seen from the carpark. It looks out over Portland Harbour and is right next to Portland Castle. This photograph was taken in the spring of 2009 on a cloudy day. There is a slipway on this beach.


Beach Type: Sand with some shell and small pebble
Information: The Portland Harbour beaches are small and secluded. The beaches are on a spit, just like the neighbouring Chesil Beach starting at the ruins of Castleton Castle. Castle Cove is a small privately owned sandy beach backed by cliffs.
Lifeguard: No
Emergancy Facilties: No but the air/sea rescue helicoptor is based close by.
Safe for Kids: Yes with supervision, beware of slippery rocks.
Pier: No
Litter and Dogs: The beaches are not cleaned and there are no litter bins. Though the beach was clean except for seaweed washed up in a recent storm
Facilities: There are no beach facilities. There are toilets and a café at nearby Hamm Beach.
Activities: Visit Portland Castle, Portland Bill lighthouse. Snorkelling, Diving, Swimming
Getting Here: Portland is off the A354.
Parking: There is a small amount of free on-road parking by the beaches.
Public Transport: The nearest train station is Weymouth. There is a regular bus service from Weymouth to Portland
Walking: There is a network of coastal footpaths in the area and 3 castles to visit.

While on Portland also, visit Portland Bill and its 3 lighthouses, Rufus Castle near Church Ope Beach and the Portland Museum. Portland Castle is next to this beach.  Nearest Supermarket is in Weymouth. Shopping in Fortuneswell and Easton Portland. The verne prison is based on the top of Portland and its arch entrance can be seen as you head onto Portland
